Byodo-in

This is one of the many famous, important, world-heritage site temples, in Uji, south Kyoto-fu. The building shape is supposed to mimic a phoenix, and 2 of them are perched on the roof of the central building. It has a nice garden and a museum with some cool Buddha carvings that are resting on clouds and playing instruments or fishing, they look like they're having a good time. After wandering around the temple and by the river (which was running very fast due to the recent Noah-like rain we've had, Rainy Season seems to be making up for last years lackluster appearance and is going out this year with a bang) I stopped for some macha no kakigori, my favorite Japanese sweet. Was walking along the riverside when I started to feel a few drops of rain from the grey clouds that had been hanging overhead threatingly all day, and decided to call it good and headed back to the station. This proved to be a wise decision, for a second after I'd stepped onto the platform another torrential rainpour started coming down. Also luckily Osaka was still as sunny as when I left, as I'd hung my futon out for a fluffing, it had gotten uncomfortably flat during the last 2 rainy weeks. So all in all a good day, checked off another sightseeing place on my list and will have a good nights sleep on my fluffy futon.

reflection pictures are cool, and so artsy

Tenjin Matsuri

This is one of the 3 biggest festivals in Japan and it's here in Osaka. The boats have portable shrines that are taken out of their resting places and carried down to the river. Each boat is full of people cheering and clapping, and when it gets dark enough they start setting off fireworks. It was ridiculously crowded of course with the police doing slightly obsessive crowd control so when you started walking in one direction you couldn't stop, so I wandered off the bridge to find some food and couldn't get back on it again. Oh well, got to see the boats in the beginning anyway. Most of them had sponsers, all the beer companies had a boat which was kinda funny. Lots of people looked festive wearing their yukata and some guys were wearing jin bei. Next week going to 2 fireworks festival, as August is officially fireworks season here in good old Nihon,

I Heart Japanese Shoes

Check out my sweet new geta! Ritsuko took me to a shop where you choose the bottom part and the straps and they put them together for you. Women's geta are narrow- apparently it's considered "sexy" for your toes to hang off, odd, we'll see if I get any cat calls wearing these around town.
